Define: Create a book over a city in San Diego

Solution: Barrio Logan typography book.

I was lucky enough to learn about Logan Heights, one of San Diego’s oldest Mexican American neighborhoods. The Barrio has been around since San Diego city’s earliest history. I took on the challenge of bringing to light all the hardships the neighborhood has faced.

Research.

The neighborhood of Barrio Logan has faced many challenges, however one positive outcome from these adversities was the construction of Chicano Park. I started my research there and took to the streets to talk to the people in the area to hear it form their perspective. This is where I met, Woi Haipsi, a descendant of the Kumeyaay people. Woi told me the story of how his ancestors owned the land long before there were borders. I photographed many parts of Chicano Park as this is where the history of the Barrio tells its story, a story they hope lives on with the city of San Diego.

Revise.

With a grid system chosen I was able to make some minor adjustments to the typography and images. For my font system I chose a combination of serif and san serif fonts, Bodoni and Univers.
